JoeGelato: Italy is Closer than Ever
The best and most authentic Italian gelato in Mexico City is to be found at JoeGelato, inaugurated a few months ago in Colonia Juarez aka Zona Rosa. Joe, formerly of Ricerca Gelatería, has streamlined operations and opened a smartly appointed locale closer to many of us. He concentrates on producing both traditional gelatos such as pistacchio and hazelnut as well as knockout modern flavors like olive oil, red tea, kaffir lime and buttermilk. There is much competition amongst ice cream makers these days, but Joe is the winner. Gelato is sold by the scoop, half liter, or can be ordered in larger quantities.

The force behind the gelateria is young chef José Luís Cervantes. Joe, as he is familiarly known, began his career working at two of Mexico City’s most renowned restaurants, Pujol and Quintonil. He has also toiled in kitchens in Paris, Tokyo, New York, Australia and most recently as part of the team at the Michelin-starred Le Calandre in Padua, Italy. Ricerca, a trattoria in the south of the city was his first venture in Mexico, but he recently closed it to concentrate on gelato. The chef explains that, “...a really strong tradition in Italy is gelato - it’s emblematic, like a flag. We don’t have the real thing here. Oh, we have ice cream, but that’s not the same thing. I wanted to share my love and knowledge of this art in Mexico. “Making gelato really is more of a science  - all based on percentages of ingredients balanced and pit against each other."

GFMX and collaborators have taste-tested the myriad ice cream options that have sprung up recently, and all roads lead to...Joe Gelato. Buona provata!
