TACO TIME: Carnitas @ El Gran Abanico

In every neighborhood in the city are found mini-institutions, the “greats” that only the locals know about, until word gets out. This huge, bustling purveyor of divine,  carnitas - confit of pork - and other carnivorous delights, is located south of the centro, not too far from Mercado Jamaica. Customers spill out onto the street where standing-room-only tacos are sold and eaten at stool-less cafe tables. Jolly devotees revel in succulent porcine goodness inside accompanied by festive salsa music and picante salsa sauce.  Surtida, which is a bit of everything and delicious, may be over the greasy top for some, in which case, a drier costilla is called for.
